How are industrial quality saw blades made?

Saw plates are first cut from high quality steel sheets with a high power laser. The rough plates are then heat treated and surface ground to the proper thickness. The plates are then flattened, tentioned, and prepared for the brazing of carbide tips.

Carbide tips are brazed to the plates using robotic brazing machines. After brazing the nearly completed blades are ground on the sides, face and top of the carbide tip to achieve the proper kerf, and desired geometry. CNC grinders are used to achieve optimum accuracy and high quality fine grit grinding wheels are used to achieve premium finish quality.

The final step in the manufacturing of industrial quality saw blades is the inspection by a saw smith to ensure that the blade is level (flat), and properly tensioned so that the blade will run and cut true.  The saw smith uses special hammers, an anvil, a straight edge as well as a test stand to make any adjustments to the plate. Saw smithing is a special skill that requires years to master.
